Sediment: Enemy of Storage Water Heaters

    Last updated 6 months ago

If you’re a homeowner, you know how important it is to maintain your home’s plumbing system in order to avoid frequent sewer or drain repairs. One of the hardest working appliances within this system is your hot water heater, which supplies your family with countless gallons of water over the course of its life. To learn why it’s so important to keep your storage water heater free of sediment, take a look at these important points:

    Sediment Causes Heat-Related Damage

Sediment is composed of calcium carbonate and other materials that are naturally found in water. This sediment accumulates at the bottom of the water heater’s storage tank and grows increasingly warmer as the appliance heats up water. The temperature of the sediment can eventually become high enough to damage the heater’s steel frame and ruin the overall function of the appliance.

    Sediment Accumulation Blocks Drainage

As sediment builds up in the tank, it can begin to trickle into other areas of the heater, including the drain valve. Once sediment enters this valve, it can quickly clump together and form a clog that prevents water from flowing out of the heater. You may not notice this problem immediately, but over time, you will notice a change in your water pressure and an increase in your energy bills.

Buildup Leads to a Noisy Breakdown

If you neglect your storage water heater by failing to regularly clean out sediment or to contact your plumber for repairs, you increase the chances of a permanent breakdown. As your water heater begins to fail, it will emit loud noises. These noises are caused by water trapped beneath the sediment, which generates steam bubbles that then burst.

If you suspect that sediment has accumulated in your hot water heater, call Rapid Rooter Plumbing right away.
